BioShock
Developed by 2K, BioShock has been named best game of 2007 and is surely one of the most newsworthy games ever created. Spiritual sequel of System Shock 2, only published for PCs, BioShock is a little atypical shooter because of its features, notoriously more applicable to a RPG.
PLOT You’re on an airplane flying to England, where you are supposed to meet your cousin. "You are supposed", exactly, because right in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean your aircraft suddenly gets broken and ends in the sea. You, only survivor to the incident, catch sight of a lighthouse near the crash and, a sit is the only chance of escape by the air disaster, you head into the building. On the inside, you’ll immediately realize that it is not a simple lighthouse, there is a bathyscaphe on the bottom and that is going to be your door to a new world!
You’ll now meet, by a projected movie, Andrew Ryan, the maker and founder of a submarine town called Rapture. Ryan explains to you how Rapture is a city mainly founded on everyone’s ideas, a place totally peopled by the best brains in the world: scientists, engineers, doctors, physicians, but even artists, actors, singers, everything you need to survive, but with some nonconformity. A city where "an artist is not to be afraid of censorship; where the big is not to be confined by the little one; where the scientist is not to be limited by ridiculous prudes ". Although something went wrong, and the inhabitants o that pseudo-perfect city are not normal anymore, they’re now refused, disfigured monsters looking for victims to catch energy from (here called Adam). Obviously, it is up to you to figure out what is going on and to be able to get surface again.
GAME SYSTEM The game is structured as a classical first person shooter where, by the first person view, you’ll have to shoot enemies down. The difference between most of the shooters is in the presence of plasmids, some powers we’ll be likely to use in many situations to get out of trouble. Plasmids exactly works as guns, but are to be used by the opponent buttons on the joypad (right buttons for guns and left ones for plasmids) and have got some particular powers. By using them, you’ll be likely to shoot fire, electric flash, ice or even an insect swarm, by consuming a power bar called Eve (Adam and Eve... remember anything?). It’s up to the player, then, to use both guns and plasmids in the several game situations to kill the different kinds of enemies. Besides the different kinds of refused, in fact, we’ll have to deal with the gigantic Big Daddys, men worn in a scuba diver suite, sometimes armed with a little drill, odd characters in this game. They have a defined rule inside the story and, if you decide to deal with them, I can make you sure that it’s not going to be easy at all. Another feature in the game are the Rooms of Life: these cabins are needed to make the character come back from the dead once killed, giving us the chance to continue the battle we died in. This system is, although, been subjected to many critics from players, as because of it, it’s practically impossible losing and you can finish the game without any actions strategy. In fact, once back to life, you’ll be able to easily kill the enemy that killed us, because i twill have the same health level as before our death. 2K Games.... |
