HeavenlySword is the first title created by Ninja Theory for the next-gen and exclusive console PS3, that has got people talk very much about its similarity to the title "God of War". But let’s get into the details.
STORY Action games hardly have a particularly complex and passionate story, but Heavenly Sword is surely an exception. The story is about the making of the "Heavenly Sword" by a god and of a legend around it and that will change Nariko’s life. Nariko is the character who, once taken the sacred sword in her hands will have to face the power will of a lord of wars named "Botan" and his army. The story is told in six exciting chapters, at the end of each one you have to face an Botan’s army General (the so-called "ending level boss "). GAMEPLAY As in God of War, we’ll manage an able fighter. Armed with the sacred sword, Nariko will face the pitiless and great Botan’s army. Fighting is amazing to be seen, the evolutions, better called dances are keepbreathing. Nariko will know how to nimbly move among the fierce blows of the enemies. By the "Heavenly Sword" Nariko will be likely to change the kind of attack, a short-medium distance, and the power attack. As in every action games there’s some kind of repetition in the fighting, but by a “bonus” system, you’ll be able to unlock some new moves that will make fighting more and more exciting. During Nariko’s game phases, there will alternate some very good integrated phases in the story and, moreover, in the gameplay, where we’ll use Nariko’s sister, Kai. She, instead of her brother, can use a simple crossbow and distance-attacks, but the arrows you’ll shoot can be driven to the target by the SIXAXIS system. GRAPHIC Heavenly Sword shows a cure and a character typecasting of a very good making. The setting and the ocean bottom are really well made. But, I need to say that Heavenly Sword has got some flaws, from the not well defined shadows to a not that stable framerate, that still won’t affect the game experience. To be underlined is the huge quantity of armies that will be moved by Playstation 3, composed by hundreds and hundreds of enemies, ready to tear our heroine apart.
AUDIO The soundtrack is perfect. Music, highly directed, will make the player dip into our Nariko’s adventure, as you’ve been living it in the first person. Marked as an A.
CONSIDERATIONS When we’re playing Heavenly Sword, it looks like watching an Hollywood movie, the scenes, the movies and, moreover, the dubbing, are made in a very perfect way by Ninja Theory. The acting and the characters’ making are one of the best features of the game. Heavenly Sword can’t be called a long game for sure, in fact you can end it in about 6-7 hours, but most of its special contents are quite difficult to be unlocked, so the player who wants to unlock 100% of the game, will have to try it hard, especially using the “Hell Mode” (which is unlockable by ending once the game). The game, even if short, deserves attention and lets us hope in a possible sequel. |
