Ski Racing 2006
Ski Racing is one of the best skiing game on the market. The 2005 version, before Turin’s Olympiads, introduces many news and improvements. The game was produced by JoWood, which has been releasing some very good sports videogames for years now.
Before analyzing the main items of this game, I’m already noticing you that it’s a game for sports passionate only, or you may get bored very soon, especially if you don’t know the ski world.
THE GAME The game doesn’t leave all that choice: the career in the world cup is, doubtless, the most interesting part, that lets the player to test himself in every race, by facing the several disciplines. These are: -Downhill, very cured, makes the idea of speed very clear, but maybe it’s not well cured for what concerns difficulty, a sit looks one of the simplest disciplines. -Giant, almost like the downhill, increases the level of difficulty because, even speed is the same, you have to face more doors on the track. -Giant Slalom, aside the previous ones, it’s quite difficult, a sit requires approaching the doors and, at the same time, a minimum speed to earn time. -Slalom, at the beginning this may reveal as the most difficult as you have to face every door with extreme precision, but, practicing, it becomes a fascinating discipline. -Combined, at the beginning, it’s the discipline that takes you to the best results because it combines downhill to a slalom and, by doing this, it reset many opponents’ results. For skiing passionate, it’s possible to face single turns playing famous champions. It’s generally a simple but funny game, you need a little of patience for starters to learn how to use ski.
GRAPHIC Graphic makes its own effect, it’s probably the most attractive feature in the game. Landscapes are very realistic and really wonderful, too bad you can’t enjoy them too much in races, or you may end up down. Tracks are cured with a top attention, so it can be the truer as possible. However snowy races and skier profiles can be improved.
AUDIO To say the truth, the audio leaves something behind. The menu music is not exciting and, during the game, the bells shacked by the public bother your concentration (I’m wondering how real skier do); ski effects on the snow are still quite realistic. A future improvement wouldn’t be bad.
GAMEPLAY AND LONGEVITY As already said before, the most interesting part of the game is the career mode, but it’s all about feelings. Tracks and disciplines’ range makes the game exciting, but surely not for long. In fact, after a while, you realize that the game doesn’t totally reflect the reality, mostly about times: in fact the variety of times is limited, and sometimes, for some mistakes, you get the same penalization. Also challenges are limited, by which you can unlock some tools: only 3 challenges levels for 3 categories. However, the world championship is well made, tracks aren’t many but they’re likeable, so, after all, you can have some fun.
APPEAL The game is for several gamers’ categories, of course particularly to sports passionate. Learning to race is not difficult but it still requires some sort of a starting commitment. The game is for the younger and older, but, of course, an adult public will leave it sooner. Surely the spirit of the race, the search for the best performance and the will of winning always excite the whole public and this game, maybe because real skiing is like this too, introduces all of these features.
FINAL JUDGEMENT In the ending, it’s not that exciting game, but, at the beginning, it enjoys and gets you on fire. Surely, when you start winning everything you can get bored, but sometimes you come back to have some race to have fun. I also need to say that for these sports game there’s a little competition, so a “bravo” to the makers, may they get always better and better! |
