Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
After our Spiderman 3 review, we're back to get busy on a title drawn by an action movie: Pirates of the Caribbean ? At World's End. If many of you are wondering the reason of this apparently necessary binomial movie-videogame, the answer is simple: marketing. Nowadays the movie majors have understood that pretty all the advertising rounds over the web. This is the reason why railing at the market by merchandising and videogames drawn by movie has become a necessity. But let's come back analyzing our title. The game portrays the pirate environment half-a-way between the action and the comic. The game is divided in two macro-sections, in the first our captain Jack Sparrow will have to handle several adventures to regain malefic Davy Jones' heart. This first part of the game culminates by the encounter with the frightful Kraken. The second part of the game sees our hero and his unhinged crew uniting their own forces to the Lord Beckett's ones to defeat once for all Davy Jones. In fact the game takes part of the second and third movie but it introduces lots of original scenes never seen in the cinematographic version. In the game you'll mainly embody captain Jack Sparrow but you'll also be able to use different characters, such as Elisabeth, Will and others. Your battles sword-sounded will take you through different settings, from Tortuga to Singapore. Unfortunately the weak point of this title is found in the fighting sequences. You'll have at your disposal several attacks and combos and, more enemies you'll defeat, you'll get other unlocked but the movement of the character will result somewhat repetitive and boring. You'll also have at your disposal a defense movement but it is practically useless, given the fact that every fighting, very easy, won't damage you physically, unless your enemy beats you at your back. If then you'll turn to defend yourself against the enemy at your back, the one who was attacking you before will beat you. You'll be likely to use also between different kinds of weapons (grenades, knives and guns) but nearly all of them are difficult to be used; expect for the grenades that always do their duty. Each level starts with an animated sequence, then you'll be charged of your task. You'll be moved inside an area when you'll have to face your enemies, you won't be able to get

out of it (it's limited by invisible walls) since when you don't defeat every enemy. Once you goaled your task you'll have to run by a short way and then start over everything. Sometimes you'll have to follow the animated scene respecting the order to push a combination of predefined keys to go on to the next level (expedient already used in Tomb Raider Legend). Of course it's not an absorbing part of the game mainly because for the most part of the scene you'll look at the corner of the screen waiting for the combination of keys; not being able to enjoy the movie. The levels are quite linear but, because of the few information you'll be given in the starting movie, you'll often cruise. You won't have the control of the camera, which means that you'll often find yourself with a turned sight. None of the missions is particularly interesting and it's not so useful the expedient of the mini-games inside the levels. These ones are totally optional but of course after having borne with all the fighting they will taste as a fresh air breath. The graphic engine is in a fairly good level, the frame rate is good and some fighting sequences are well cured, but nothing particularly exciting. The sound is well-structured and it follows the actions quite well, but also here it's nothing special. There aren't the original dubbing voices of Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, or Orlando Bloom but the voices of the English actors (as always we've been playing the English version) that took their part are however of a good level. The game utilizes the soundtrack of the movie adding some fade in and fade out at the starting and at the end of the sequences. The sound effects are made by some good samples but don't differ each other. Obviously there's not so much to differ in the sound of the swords during the fighting but maybe some cry and comments more could be added. Pirates of the Caribbean ? At World's End is simply a game created to promote the movie, you can use all of its characters, listen to the original soundtrack and, if you haven't watched it yet, it will peeve your imagination, soon leading you to the nearest cinema. The game is boring for almost its totality, your character will cruise in exotic settings, never having interesting goals. Advisable only to the ones who can't do without feeling pirate for one day.
