Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia
If we look at the feature list of Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia, action and fighting with upgradable guns, four-players co-op mode, online multiplayer and a really well cured comics-graphic, we may say it's a innovative and sure success game. Unfortunately the last Artificial Studios born widely disappoints all your and our expectations, as ideas are good but the realization is poor.
The plot is somehow weird: Zack (school's grind) is finally able to get courage at inviting Claire (the dark girl) at his to confess his love to her. His friend Andy (the mess-up guy) suddenly shows up ruining the atmosphere and, even it's not enough, Jennifer (school's cheerleader) rings the door, wanting to exploit Zack for his homework. Everything becomes chaotic and confusing until someone knocks the door. Who might be? A crowd of zombies. Yeah, we don't know what strange reason for, but a whole crowd of monsters and demons chose to attack Suburbia. Your job will be the one to choose one of the 4 characters (made in USA stereotypes) and kill'em all. After this starting too predictable, you may think that the programmers of the game satisfied their fancy by creating amazing monsters and ever seen before, instead we can only see an unlimited list of the most classic enemies: phantoms, gremlins, UFOs, skeletons, zombies (and all their variants such as pirate-zombies, samurai-zombies, etc), Martians, mummies, vampires, etc. Sincerely the story seems a simple excuse to create another madness game with nothing special in it. The attempt to make this title richer with irony and comedy miserably failed.
The gameplay is boringly predictable. You'll start the game by your default attacks and, going on, you'll be able to buy or build a series of new guns by the help of your friend Larry Tools (not casually his name is Larry ?Tools?) who will be found in some areas of the game. Your guns will mostly be recovered from daily-use objects like CD-launcher cannons, or fake nails, to the most common guns such as short-barrel rifles and rocket-launcher. Even if the range of the guns is noteworthy, it's clear that the few guns we take with us, the higher our advantage will. In fact, it's better if we pick up 2 or 3 guns and make them more powerful, instead of taking with you a whole armory that may slow our reaction skill in the choosing moment. Anyway, you'll have the chance to create some hotkeys to quickly scroll your armory. The guns at your disposal aren't strictly connected to a monster or to a level. You'll start from Zach's house and you'll direct yourself towards the police station, you'll need to pass 5 main setting, and each of them contains 25 different mini levels. The game needles you to carefully explore every level, searching for hidden parts of guns. You can use this to make Larry upgrade the guns you got. It's a good way to get the longevity longer but if you're so unlucky to have to start the level over again, it really becomes frustrating. Once you reach a checkpoint, rather than come back, you'll prefer let the hard seek go and use standard guns.
The single player mode is way most boring, at least if you're in company, you'll have the chance to make some laugh. So, if you have the chance to invite 3 friends at you (the story mode only works with LAN multiplayer, not online) you might even have fun for some minute. But in this case, united we don't stand: by playing with 3-4 friends.... |
