Football Manager 2008
Faithful to the date, Sports Interactive releases its successful manager, Football Manager 2008.
After having revolutionized sports manager’s world during the past few years, FM08, more than anything else, takes care of the particulars. In fact gameplay and longevity of the game have hardly been improved, by creating a funnier (and longer) and more real game. But, in the details, what has really changed from the lucky 2007 version? Let’s see some points:
GAME We remember that the game is a sport manager, and makes you play a coach, starting his own career. After having chosen a team (advised choice if you don’t want to play for nothing waiting clubs’ offers) the game starts. The goal is to respect the society’s expectations or maybe marvel everyone with an unforgettable performance. You’ll just have to handle one team, from the basic operations (training, making the lineup, buying/selling players), to the most complicated ones managing the psychophysical conditions of players, reacting to press insistence, finding the best solutions for the team). As years passed the correspondence of this game with a real coach has been improved. In fact, to succeed in this game you’ll have to do everything that a coach does in real life and, maybe, even more.
PROS AND CONS There are surely more pros than cons, at least for the ones who love this kind of game. In fact, there are some basic improvements for what concerns the relationships with players and with management, mostly the last one. Many adjustments have been made on the game sentences (they were quite shocking before). Besides, the national team coach rule has been improved, with a lot of more commitments (like watching previous matches to see players).
GRAPHIC For a management game like this, graphic doesn’t count that much, but it surely can make a good effect. The improvement of menus and panels, mostly for what concerns the color is very important; it’s not anymore the usual job menu, but a concentrate of options almost redefined by an artist.
AUDIO Also the sound part doesn’t cover an important part in the game and it surely can’t be considered one of the best parts of FM08. The stadium choruses are too monotone, and after a while you start preferring to play without audio, so we wonder: "Why haven’t they used a good background music?"
GAMEPLAY Nothing to say about it, everything is absolutely well cured in every detail, and there’s anything that can happen to a real coach. Aside the last years, the chances you’ve got have increased, going towards a real simulation. The only black mark (which is also in the last versions) is that, if your team enters a negative period, it’s difficult to get out of it, but this can also depend on the player’s (coach’s) ability.
LONGEVITY AND APPEAL The game, as requires a great database, is not that long, anyway only the fans of the game will get till the end. Actually, after a while, it loses its attractive part, especially if you win everything or if you can’t learn how to play, but then there’s always the boost to start back a new adventure. You can’t ask for more, in the end games are made to distract yourself, and Football Manager is made just for that.
FINAL JUDGEMENT Compliments to the creators who go on improving the game year by year, who knows what’s going to happen next year for the next version. Perfection wasn’t reached, but nobody ever can, so this game has to be considered very good. I sincerely advice you to try out a career with a little team and then take it to some good finish lines, it’s really worth it! But I don’t want to spoiler you over anything, so good game! |
